Stop and smell the roses

I ran across this interesting article the other day, and was compelled to share it. You’ll have to trust me that it’s well worth your time to read or at least scan it.

The Washington Post recently setup a very unique and creative event. They contacted the world-renowned violinist - Joshua Bell, and asked him if he would pose as a street performer during the weekday commuter rush hour in a Washington DC plaza. It’s a very interesting social exercise - would you stop and notice the beauty of the moment, or would you hurry past - on to your job, appointment, or event?

So there’s the setup. I’ll let you enjoy the article itself: Pearls Before Breakfast

I’m sad to say that I probably would have passed on by. I do try to enjoy the little moments in life, but I know when I am late for an appointment on a weekday, my head is usually down and focused. What is even more sad is some of the many comments I ran across in response to this article. I can share a link to them if anyone is interested, but most seemed to totally miss the point of this beautiful piece of journalism, in my opinion, and chose to snipe at the what they perceived as snobbery of the article and classical musical. Now, that is really sad.

Next time I am leaving a Denver Nuggets game, I will definitely throw a few bucks in the case of the saxophone player that is always outside the stadium, at the bottom of the stairs the cross the railroad tracks… even if he isn’t world-famous!
