Star Wars III - end of the saga

The mighty and wise YodaA long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…

That’s how it all started. A movie that shaped lives and changed perspectives. Love it or hate it, you have to admit that it has impacted our culture for the past 30 years. The first Star Wars movie came out in 1977 and forever changed movie making. I was 8 years old at the time, and saw the movie many, many times in the theatre. The movie was a swashbuckling adventure of heroes and bad guys told in the exciting realm of space and the future. What kid in the USA didn’t have a Star Wars figure or toy growing up?

This past Thursday, May 19th 2005, was opening day for the final chapter of the 6 part saga. Director George Lucas told the story in 2 parts - 3 movies in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and then 20+ years later he came back and told the pre-story with 3 more movies in the late 90’s and this first decade of the 21st century.

I love the energy of an opening day crowd for a film like this, so as I have many times in the past, I organized an “outing” to go see it with whatever friends, family and coworkers were up for joining me. This year we had 12 people who took several hours out of their lives and work to enjoy the movie on a perfect early summer afternoon. Thanks much to Dad and Paul for helping organize the gathering this time around as I was unable to orchestrate things on the day of as I was getting Tobey to his babysitters. (Thanks Dan and Deb for watching Tobey!)

The whole group was Dad, Mom, Carrie, Ashley, her friend Liz, Chris, and from my work - Jeff, Paul, Tammy, and 2 of their friends.

Oh yeah, and the movie (Episode III - Revenge of the Sith) is awesome - go see it!

Star Wars III - Revenge of the Sith

★★★★☆ Great ending to a life-long and life-shaping series of sci-fi movies. This edition is dark, but it has to be because it ties together how Anakin turns to the dark side of the force and becomes Darth Vader, the iconic villian of the original three movies.

Not the happiest of stories, but a well written, well acted sci-fi movie painted on the interesting canvas of an empty NYC.

Great action, and a better story than I expected from an action flick. Ran a little long, especially for my four year old. Shia LaBeouf was perfect cast in his role and really held the whole movie together well.

This is definitely a new "Bond". Gone is the smoothness, and goofiness of recent Bond movies - Daniel Craig gives us a rough, raw version, and I like it. Don't miss this in the theatres! I look forward to the next installment.

I commend the story for its reality, but it was one of my least favorite Vince Vaugh movies, because it really isn't a comedy.
