Father/Son Annual Movie (4th Edition)

My Dad and I started a new tradition a few years back that we would go see an appropriate movie once a year or so, just the two of us. Appropriate is all relative, but in our case it’s usually a theme that we have a common interest in (typically SciFi) and that we know our wives aren’t necessarily interested in seeing it.

The first outing was to see StarShip Troopers, a campy 1997 sci-fi flick that had significance because we had both read the Robert Heinlein book 20 years prior.

The second edition was 2002’s Minority Report with Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg collaborating for the first time. This was a beautifully done “Blade-Runner-ish” movie with incredible effects and a detailed and action-filled storyline.

The third edition was 2004’s I, Robot with Will Smith and Bridget Moynahan. This was my favorite outing thus far - much lighter fare than Minority Report, but still an exciting Sci-Fi theme. I, Robot was based on a collection of short stories by Isaac Asimov, yet another author that Dad introduced me too. I vividly remember Dad carrying around everywhere and reading the mini magazines that would come in the mail with Asimov’s and other Sci Fi stories.

Lastly, I come to this year’s outing, which is scheduled for tonight. We’re going to see War of the Worlds (WOTW) based on the H.G. Wells story of an attack by Mars in 1898, and made famous by Orson Welles live on the radio in 1938. This is also a second Cruise and Spielberg pairing, although I think Dakota Fanning, a rising child actress is getting the most press. :)

I’ll leave a comment here later tonight to let you all know how it was, okay?

Not the happiest of stories, but a well written, well acted sci-fi movie painted on the interesting canvas of an empty NYC.

Great action, and a better story than I expected from an action flick. Ran a little long, especially for my four year old. Shia LaBeouf was perfect cast in his role and really held the whole movie together well.

This is definitely a new "Bond". Gone is the smoothness, and goofiness of recent Bond movies - Daniel Craig gives us a rough, raw version, and I like it. Don't miss this in the theatres! I look forward to the next installment.

I commend the story for its reality, but it was one of my least favorite Vince Vaugh movies, because it really isn't a comedy.

We enjoyed the movie quite a bit. It was a fun “ride” and although I thought the ending faltered a bit, I would still recommend going to see it overall. I definitely plan to buy the DVD for its effects and action-filled story.
