Battlestar Galactica Party

Apple iTunesYes, I’m a geek. This has never really been in question, and I’m completely comfortable with this label. I like to think of myself as well-rounded - with many interests, and maybe even an above average athlete (at least about 5-6 years ago), but I’m definitely a geek somewhere near the heart. :)

This past Friday, was the season 2 premier of my favorite tv show - Battlestar Galactica, which airs on Friday nights at 8:00 and 11:00 on the SciFi Channel. It’s a new, re-imagined version of the original series that aired in 1978.

I enjoyed the first season of 12 episodes so much, that I just knew I had to plan a party centered around the start of season 2 on July 15th. Paul (a friend from work) and I schemed about it for months, and over time, we convinced others to check out the show. I figured a small gathering would be a great way to get fired up for the new season and share my passion for this great new sci-fi drama with a few others. We ended up with 13 adults and 4 kids in our newly remodeled basement. The picture at the right is where we were, I just forgot to take any pictures the night of the event. (Yes, that’s the BSG opening credits on the screen!) I don’t think any of the newcomers to the show were disappointed in what they saw. BSG takes typical elements of sci-fi like space (searching for Earth) and spaceships (Battlestars, Vipers, and Cylon Raiders) but doesn’t overly rely on its special effects - the reason the show really sucks me in each week is great writing, fun characters, and suprisingly good acting from the top (Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell) to the bottom of the diverse cast.

So, if you were at the party, or intrigued after reading this blog entry, and would like to catch up on or watch the entire season 1 (again), you’ll be happy to know it’s coming out on DVD this September. There is also a great miniseries that was produced in 2002 and is available on DVD and re-broadcast on the SciFi channel from time to time. It stands on its own, as does the show, but it provides extra backstory and has the same cast.

Either there are a ton of geeks out there these days, or BSG has major cross appeal. It was the #1 show on television among men 18-49 and 25-54 this past Friday night. Now we just have to convert a few more wives and girlfriends into fans! :)

Update: This is what the BSG party area now looks like, thanks to an equipment upgrade. :)

    Hi Alan,

It sounds like you guys had a great time for your gathering. I’m contemplating purchasing the DVD when it comes out. I did like the original and this series sounds even better.

You may have another few converts!

Alright alright. I love the TWIZ as much as the rest of you all and up until this point the similarities in our likes and dislikes were VERY VERY close. Nuggets, Volleyball, Rams, running, tennis, fast cars, hot chicks, good friends, sushi, early morning workouts, singing at weddings, Vegas baby, etc… I have to draw the line here buddy. BSG and Hansen don’t mix. Still love ya though….

    GO NUGS!!!

A&B - I think you guys would both really enjoy it.

Hansen - I agree, it’s about the only thing we don’t see eye-to-eye on - including Star Wars, and Star Trek, etc., but hey, even two guys who could pass as brothers have to have something to disagree on, right? :)
